Seldom Seen Scenes of Railroading
A Railroad Photography Experience presented by Kevin Hass
Kevin Hass’s interest in railroading began decades ago. He began riding trains before he was old enough to remember the experience. He goes to great lengths to find and photograph railroad subjects, making new friends and joining railroad history and preservation organizations along the way.
When choosing railroad subjects, Hass seeks out neglected areas of railroad-related equipment. He believes that the history of railroading is best portrayed through the photography of its parts. While many photographers create portraits of complete engines and cars, Hass understands that the details also need to be given their time before the camera. He has, consequently, made many of his most meaningful images later in life while visiting historic sites and railroad museums, including the National Railroad Museum.
Through the use of a camera, Kevin Hass can express his interest and appreciation of trains within a visual medium. His desire to express his interest in trains, mixed with the beauty and strength present in trains and tracks, has led to the creation of this exhibition.

Kevin is a native of Wisconsin but has lived in California since moving to Los Angeles by train at the age of two months. He is a graduate of Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara, California. His 40-year career in photography spans both commercial and creative imaging. Active in the arts community, he is a member of the Arroyo Arts Collective in Los Angeles, where he was on the Board for 20 years. He has been a member of the Pasadena Society of Artists for 23 years. He has had 12 one-person exhibitions in the U.S. and France.
Kevin teaches photography for Saddleback College, where his viewpoint on the art and science of photography is well-received. Kevin’s work is represented in the collections of the Getty Museum, the National Railroad Museum, Kodak, and the Center for Creative Photography. Kevin has made numerous photographs for publications. He has a preference for film cameras and has done his own darkroom processing and printing for many years.
